簪 Kanzashi - Ornamental Hairpin

町女 女性の髪飾りの一種。語源は髪挿しに由来する。江戸中期以降に広く普及し、巾着印籠などと同様、実用的な道具に装飾を施し工芸品へと発展させた、江戸を代表する装身具のひとつ。婚礼用の花かんざしや、金属製で高価な平打ちなど様々な種がある。

A kind of hair ornament for women. The name comes from Kami-sashi, an old word combining the Chinese characters for "hair" and "put in". It became widely dispersed after the middle of Edo period, and along with such as Kushi, Kinchaku, and Inrō is one of the accessories that represents the development of handcrafts during the Edo period through the addition of ornamentation to practical goods.
