Hibachi - Brazier

An object used as a heater or water heater by putting ash into ceramic or wooden vessels and starting a charcoal fire inside.
In the Edo period, because the left over ash was a valuable resource, traders called HAI-KAI (ash-buyers) would travel around the town to collect any that was used up. It was put to a variety of uses, including as a dye, in the process of sake production and as a fertilizer.
